Wedding Bands Ireland? Choose the best...
Updated: Mar 23
As a drummer with Anchormen, one of Ireland’s most in demand Irish Wedding Bands, Dermot Kelly knows exactly what couples need to ask and look for when planning their wedding reception party music. 'We play in all the best wedding venues in Ireland and definitely know a thing or two at this stage!' Check out Dermot's insider top 10 tips for finding and booking the best wedding reception music below...
1. Prioritise budget
What do we all remember from weddings? The music and the food. When wedding planning , prioritise budget for both and you will not be disappointed. From an entertainment point of view having the right band for your wedding reception party is crucial and should be the first thing to allow for budget wise.
Allow at least 2k for a premium quality band plus DJ. Prices may vary from band to band if they are travelling very long distances. When asking for a quote always list your confirmed wedding date and venue. In most cases you will need to pay a small deposit to secure your wedding date. Once that is complete you can relax knowing you have the wedding band you want!
Ask for and search for testimonials. The best of best wedding bands have ample reviews that they will share with you. Check our their social media pages to see if they are active too. So many of our bookings come from weddings we have played at which is always great to see.
4. Live showcases
If you can, try to see your wedding band of choice play live. It’s definitely worth travelling to do so. (Why not make a night of it and begin your wedding celebrations early!). If you can’t get to see them live, most bands have showreels and live footage available on YouTube - search ‘wedding bands Ireland’. We play a monthly gig in Sean’s Bar Athlone, a great central location for couples to see us in a relaxed live venue as opposed to a staged formal showcase. It’s also a great opportunity for couples to chat to us and ask questions.
5. Book early
Good bands are often booked up months in advance for peak wedding seasons such as summer and December/New Years. It’s worth checking availability with your wedding band for a few dates if you really want them. You can then book the hotel and everything else assured you have the band you both want. For some couples it can take longer than expected to find the right band only to discover they are already booked. Top tip, check availability as soon as you can.
6. Superstar DJ
Most wedding bands work with one or two professional DJ’s and will quote for them in their packages. We always ensure the DJ we use begins immediately when we finish our 2-2.5 hour set so there is no lull music wise. If guests or family members have specific songs they want to hear DJ’s will have no problem playing these. You can expect the DJ to play for 1.5-2.0 hours too but they will have to adhere to the venue music curfew time.
You may have the most exact schedule in mind for your wedding day but in many cases speeches can run over, meals go on longer than planned and that is all to be expected. Your wedding band will arrive in plenty of time to set up and soundcheck. We always allow 45 minutes for this once the performance area is cleared. We work with wedding venue organisers and wedding planners to ensure everything happens smoothly. Having played in so many Irish wedding venues we know how they operate when it comes to live music.
8. Music for everyone
Many couples feel like they need to decide on the set list to keep cousins, uncles and grannies happy. A good wedding band will do this without you even noticing. If you’ve chosen the right wedding band they will automatically read the dance floor, tailoring their set list for your wedding party so you can both relax, dance and enjoy your night.
9. First dance dilemma
Not sure what first dance to go with or if you want one at all? Talk to your wedding band and ask them for some advice and suggestions. The band can play your song of choice live or by MP3. We’ve played a few weddings where the couples did not want a first dance and it wasn’t a problem. In this case we make sure to get everyone on the dance floor to begin with to get the party started and it works seamlessly every time.
10. Where’s the bar?
A really important aspect to consider when choosing your wedding reception room/venue… is the bar in the same room? This may sound obvious but so many venues have the bar in another room so the wedding party are never all together (besides for dinner). Ensuring everyone is together will really help keep your dance floor busy and the atmosphere buzzing.
